Build Your Personal Brand And Then Your Biz...Or Vice Versa?
Don't put the cart before the horse.
Funny how times change.
Let’s take a minute and rewind 10 years or so.
EVERYONE wanted to build a business that they didn’t need to be a part of.
Now?
Building a personal brand is the cool new kid on the block.

Everybody’s doing it…
Anyone who’s been a subscriber for a few weeks knows that I’m a big believer in personal brands.
But that said, is the idea you should build a personal brand FIRST and then monetize it the right idea?
Or should you build a business first and THEN a personal brand?
In order to answer that question I want to talk about a similar concept.
Wantrepreneur perfectionism.
What the heck is that? Glad you asked.
Many would-be entrepreneurs make the mistake of building their product or service and doing their best to perfect it BEFORE they go sell it to the public.
That’s wrong.
As soon as you have a business idea, try to sell it first…even if you don’t have fulfillment in place yet.
Sounds crazy right?
Maybe so but consider the alternative: You spend months tweaking things and getting things ready only to find out that nobody wants your stuff.
You can’t sell it.
You HAVE to know that there’s a market for it before you dump time and money into it.

So frustrating.
Alright so what does this have to do with building a personal brand first versus building a business first…
Everything.
You can see in Wantrepreneur Perfectionism that working on the fulfillment is putting the cart before the horse.
The same is true for building a personal brand before you build your business.
You need to be an expert on something in order to build a personal brand.
#harshtruths
Now I know you could make the argument that you don’t necessarily need to build a business to be an expert.
And that’s true.
But you at least need to have a skillset that you’re paid for that you can build a brand around.
Otherwise you don’t have any value that you bring to the table.
Why would people follow you?

Don’t be that guy.
Most recommend building your personal brand first. Once you have the audience, the business will follow…right?
Eh. Sort of.
That advice is REALLY bad…at least for like 99.999998734299% of people.
Because the amount of work it takes to create the content needed to build a personal brand is…expensive, to say the least.
Not to mention time consuming.
For just a Youtube channel alone, you need Design, Video editing, and Scripting/copywriting.
You can either:
Learn or do all these yourself - which is a full-time job
Outsource them for every video - which costs as much as a full-time job.
And then there’s how long it takes to just START seeing a financial return…
Even the most successful Youtubers talk about how they hustled for years before it started paying off.
And that’s just ONE social media platform.
So the correct order is this (I see you Mr. Skipstotheend): build your biz FIRST and then use it to fund your personal brand.
If you’re a family man transitioning from employee to entrepreneur like I am, this is by far the best way to do it.
You’re welcome 😉
